Washington Post writer Valerie Strauss makes the case for the “Philosophy for Children” (P4K) movement as an approach to teaching K-12 students how to think rationally. Based on a version of the Socratic Method, P4K has been around since 1969. They describe the teacher’s role as “[helping to] foster a climate of critical thinking, guiding and informing student inquiries, helping them pay attention to the quality of their reasoning, and making sure they realize that they’re meeting on terms of equality and mutual respect — all with an underlying commitment to rational thinking as the mechanism for making better judgments.”
